Distressed Debt Investing-Revlon Consumer Products Corp

 

We like Revlon bonds at 6 cents on the dollar.

Revlon has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Revlon listed assets of $2.3 billion and debts of $3.7 billion. A debtor in possession (DIP) of $575 million has been set up.

Revlon has great brand awareness and should exit bankruptcy as a leaner consumer beauty products company.

We suggest investors review the bankruptcy information as it unfolds to determine the value of the company's unsecured debt.

Distressed Debt Market Outlook 2020-The New Normal

In the financial crisis that is brewing the government has stepped up to alleviate the pain from Covid-19 for many companies that would be crashing without help. We expect a gigantic wave of corporate defaults and bankruptcies. Given the dept of the crisis expect many of the defaulting companies to end up in liquidation unable to shed their debt burdens. The sheer amount of debt that will be needed to be restructured will pose a insurmountable challenge.  It is possible that the overhang of debt will choke off the flow of new capital and corporate investment.

Junk Bond Investors enjoy higher rates of return as compared to other fixed income investments.Investors should use this powerful bond market to loosen up on investment grade bonds and purchase only short dated government securities and to begin to accumulate an aggressive junk or high yield portfolio.During a weak economic environment or in a recession junk bonds tend to fall in price as the default risk increases. For investors that do their homework lots of opportunities will begin within the next 18 months.

Based on credit ratings junk bonds are those with a Baa rating or lower from Moody's and a BBB rating or lower from S&P. Bonds with a C rating are speculative and a D rating is a defaulted security.
